From the desk of the President
|
Dear Members and Friends
2020 is indeed an unusual year! To be able
to update you on the newest developments, we have decided to shorten the summer
break and issue an additional newsletter in July.
Covid-19 remains our focus and priority. As
the recent flare-ups in China, Germany and Switzerland demonstrate, letting the
guard down is not an option and would cause severe consequences. This applies
to the governments and each citizen.
The trade conflict between China and the U.S.
is not abating. How much the trade dispute is fueled by the election year in
the U.S. remains to be seen and will be fully understood in 2021 only. For this
reason, we expect further interruptions in the trade and economic ties between
the two countries in the coming weeks and months. The recently issued U.S.
sanctions regarding Hong Kong as well as the implementation of the new national
security law will make the export of goods to the region more complicated.
Vigilance is key regarding compliance with the customs and export regulations.
In our last newsletter we expressed hope that
travel restrictions between Switzerland and China would be lifted soon. This has
not materialized, and we still face severe travel restrictions with only a few flights
per week from selected European countries to a few destinations in mainland
China. Travel between Hong Kong and mainland China is restricted as well. We
understand that Europe will allow travel from mainland China on the condition
that travel restrictions to mainland China ease. Should you have travel plans
to mainland China, please monitor the travel announcements of the Chinese,
European and Swiss governments.
As we mentioned in previous newsletters,
the AGM 2020 had to be postponed. With pleasure we can now announce that the
AGM will take place in combination with the celebration of the 40th anniversary
of the Swiss Chinese Chamber of Commerce, on October 29 in Zurich. The program
is currently being finalized. We want to make sure that as many members as
possible will attend the event, therefore, the attendance fee is extremely
attractive. This is made possible by our corporate sponsors as well as by the
decision to accept a potential loss at the event. However, the number of
participants is limited, so please secure your ticket early!
Please check our website for updates on Covid-19
and webinars – and do not hesitate to contact us via email for questions. The
chamber continues to be your partner in these trying times.
The next newsletter will be issued on September
7, 2020. We wish you a healthy and relaxing summer break.
With best regards,
Felix Sutter
